A paired comparison field trial to test the effectiveness of carbofuran 3% granular formulation in controlling bean fly attack on long beans and french beans was conducted at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Serdang. Results showed that damage caused by bean fly Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon) to french beans, Phaseolus vulgaris, can be significantly (P < .01) reduced by as much as 87% (an average of 70% reduction) by soil application of carbofuran 3% granules formulation prior to planting. Treated french bean plants also showed an average of 30 cm increase in plant height. Similarly, significant reduction in attack was achieved on treated long beans, Vigna sisquipedalis, but treated long beans plants did not differ significantly (P < .05) in their heights as compared to the control. Pest attack was very much lower (highest attack was 23%) on long beans when compared to the french beans which suffered 100% attack under field conditions experienced during the trial.
