An experiment to evaluate the capacity of some Malaysian soils to absorb sulphate ions was conducted. Four representative soils, two from the Order Oxisols and two from Ultisols were used. Ten grams of the soils were equilibrated with 0.1 M CaCl2, containing various amounts of sulphate ions, for 24 hours. The sulphate disappearing from the solution was taken as the amount adsorbed. The sorption data were evaluated using the Langmuir isoterm equation. It was found that the four soils used differed in their capacity to adsorb sulphate ions, and it increased in the order of Munchong>Bungor>Melaka>Padang Besar. The maximum amounts of adsorbed sulphate were 200.40, 115.61, 107.99 and 56.82 µg S g-1 soil for the Munchong, Bungor, Melaka and Padang Besar series respectively.
